My first few days at the MTC have been really good. An Elder who is serving in Singapore Malay speaking showed me around the MTC campus, helped me drop off my suitcases, and then dropped me off at my classroom. In the classroom, I met my district. I have two companions, Elder Calabuig and Elder Curley. Elder Calabuig is from Texas, will be serving in France Paris (French speaking) and is a native speaker of French. Elder Curley is from Chook, Micronesia, and will be serving in Zimbabwe Harare (English speaking) and is really funny. The other person in our district is Sister Oliveira from Brazil, who is serving in Florida (English speaking). I'm still not totally sure why I was put in an ADL (Advanced Dual Language?) English-speaking district, but I guess it is because they think Elder Calabuig and I are proficient enough in our mission languages to not need to study the language at the MTC. If only they knew...
Yesterday, we met our Branch Presidency. They gave us a quick lesson about Adjusting to Missionary Life, and then they gave us all assignments. I ended up being assigned to be the District Leader, so I will be able to teach a few lessons and pick the hymns and stuff for our classes! Woo hoo!
Overall, the MTC has been really good. It is really busy and a bit overwhelming, but it has been a great experience for learning how to see the tender mercies in my life. On one day, I was feeling kinda sad about not being in a Chinese class like all the other Singapore missionaries, but then a really nice man came up to me and just started to talk to me in Mandarin. He was an MTC teacher, and he served in Taiwan. It was just what I needed to pick myself back up. The whole mission experience has helped 1 Nephi 1:20 to come alive to me: "But behold, I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance." If we are looking for them, we can all see the little things the Lord does for us on a daily basis to help us get through.
I love you all so much! I miss you a lot, but I am also very grateful to be serving a mission!
