The Call of Kuching
Hello everyone! Sorry that this email is going to be very rushed, I am actually travelling to a new area today. I am not exactly sure how it will work out, but I will be sure to tell you more next week!
This was a really good week! I really love the 2nd Ward, it is a fun time talking to people from China all day.
One of the miracles from the week was that this nice man named Zhao camed to church. We asked him how he had heard about church, and he said that we gave him a card on the MRT. And then, (wait for it) he asked how he could join the church and when he could get baptized! That doesn't happen every day, but it was exciting. Plus, he said that he doesn't smoke or drink, which makes baptism 1000% easier.
Also in the Second Ward we teach English Class, which is really fun! A lot of the people we are teaching come to the class, as well as some other people. This week, the lesson was on jokes. The best joke I heard was "Why did you eat the cat?" (Punchline) "Don't you know you can't Eat the cat?!" It didn't really make sense to anyone, but that being said joking in another language can be hard.
Yu Ze is doing really well! He is still excited to get baptized after he gets back from China (he leaves this Week). Jia Min is also doing well, he is one smart 10-year-old.
Overall, I am grateful to be serving a mission. I love knowing that we existed before this life and that this life has a purpose and we are going somewhere after this life. I love knowing that we have Heavenly Parents who look out for us and love us. Life is full of twists and turns, but that's how it's meant to be! I love you all so much!
Best,
Elder Weatherford 福长老
P. S. As you can guess from the name of the email, I am officially in Kuching! I am excited to get to know the people here.
Wow, this has been a crazy week (just like every week haha)! A few days ago, I had no idea I would be on a plane to Kuching right now. But I guess life just moves forward and we roll with the punches.
Honestly, the people from China are all really solid! The hardest part is that so many of them work on Sundays, because they want to make as much money as possible for their families back in China. But they are a really cool people, I think that when China opens there will be plenty of work to do.
I am still really excited for Vishnu as well...he is making the adjustment to the YSA Ward now and is adjusting quite well.
I love your thoughts on the King Follett Sermon. It really is amazing how cool of a revelator Joseph Smith was. Also, how cool to know that Heavenly Father is an exalted being and once lived on an earth like us. That is one of the biggest ways I've changed on my mission...I used to see God as a distant object, but now I see Him as us, just trillions of years later down the progression ladder! For me, a couple parts stuck out that I think are interesting. First, like you said, Joseph Smith explains that God was not God from all eternity, but rather an exalted man! Second, we must learn how to be Gods from grace to grace, from exaltation until exaltation UNTIL we attain to the resurrection of the dead. Our existence is far more than just this life...we will continue to grow and learn for many many years in a process that perhaps will culminate with the resurrection. So, will we all be resurrected at the same time or resurrected according to our progression? Interesting to think about, eh?
Wow, missions sure are a rollercoaster of emotions, but I guess all of life is like that. But, I find that no matter how hard everything gets, God sprinkles little tender mercies throughout all of it. For example, this morning as I was driving to the airport for my fight and right after I called and talked to you, I felt down and sad and scared. But, it turns out the man who was driving me has some old friends from our church, and so he drove me for free. I felt really glad in my heart, and was grateful to God to give me such a pick me up.
I'm not really sure where I'll be next Monday, but I hope that you know that I am safe, happy, and healthy. Life is hard, but God saves His hardest battles for His strongest soldiers. Travelling is scary, but it is all God's plan.
